SSR Land Footprint Plan Restoration Strategy

The Land Footprint Management Plan (LFMP), as directed by the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP), will guide the strategy to reduce some of the long-term cumulative effects of human activity and footprint to achieve a landscape with healthy, functioning ecosystems that continue to provide opportunities for responsible economic development, tourism and recreation for all Albertans. This landscape has had significant human impact from various land uses affecting important values (e.g. water quality, fish, wildlife, Indigenous Peoplesí traditional uses and recreational opportunities). The Livingstone and Porcupine Hills planning area includes alpine, subalpine, montane, foothills parkland, foothills fescue grasslands, and mixed grass native landscapes. To guide integrated planning the LFMP focuses on mitigating threats to reduce risk (avoid, reduce, restore and offset) at all times to manage footprint within proposed motorized access limits. There will be a need for a SSR Land Footprint Plan Restoration Strategy to restore and offset unsustainable anthropogenic disturbance and improve vegetation management. By identifying and prioritizing restoration opportunities, this project will directly enable the implementation of reclamation actions with the outcome of re-establishing native plant communities on disturbed sites within the planning areas and eventually restoring ecosystem processes to as natural (normal) a state as possible. These efforts will also contribute to the commitment in SSRP to conserve intact native grasslands, maintain healthy riparian areas to prevent sedimentation of streams (which affect native fish) and restore connectivity of native landscapes for wildlife.
This project will enable the implementation of reclamation actions in the LFMP through two main objectives:
1) Developing a strategy and tool to be used by Government of Alberta staff with criteria to prioritize sites for restoration
2) Compile a research report
