21TDRRSD823 - Heli-Stocking of Fish in Remote Lakes

The Department’s multi-facetted mandate intends to ensure the sustainability of Alberta’s natural resources for the enjoyment of Albertans. One of the many recreational opportunities provided by Alberta Environment and Parks is the stocking of fish in remote lakes not accessible by road. The helicopter stocking (heli-stocking) of fish in remote lakes is a difficult and hazardous activity. The rotary wing aircraft has to be outfitted in a particular manner (e.g. sliding doors, some seats removed and the ability to carry compressed oxygen tanks). The pilot must have adequate flying hours (minimum of 400 hours on the chartered model of aircraft), experience in flying and hovering over water at low altitudes and be mountain certified. Staff from Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) will be inside the helicopter directing the pilot to the correct lake and also measuring and releasing the fish into the lake from the back of the helicopter. At the request of AEP staff, fish may also be transported and released using a clean Bambi Bucket in good operating condition.
