Description

Alberta’s Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (2016) mandates an environmental science program to monitor, evaluate, and report on the condition of the environment to Albertans. The Science Strategy (2019) of the Office of the Chief Scientist requires AEP to provide credible and objective environmental monitoring, applied science, evaluation, and reporting in support of the Government’s efforts and priorities in achieving desired environmental outcomes and sustainable development of natural resources. Accordingly, AEP is currently operating lotic (rivers and streams), lentic (lakes and reservoirs), and groundwater water quality monitoring programs that inform decision making across the Province. Activities for these monitoring programs include collecting various types of samples (e.g., water, sediment, biological materials), which then are analyzed for selected parameters at suitable analytical laboratories.
