Manitoba’s provincial parks offer park visitors and seasonal campers the enjoyment of outdoor living and opportunities to be close to nature. Currently, Manitoba Parks of Conservation and Climate uses Parks Reservation Service (PRS) and Parks Seasonal Site (PSS) systems to receive the reservations and payments for a campsite from Park visitors. Both of these systems were developed in the early 2000s, and present now with challenges related to the foundation technologies. With a significant rise in the number of users, these systems are no longer meeting the needs/expectations of internal staff nor park visitors.
PRS allows the public to reserve one of 4000 + nightly campsites or facilities available in one of Manitoba provincial park campgrounds. It also acts as the onsite campground management tool to manage the campground inventory and supports the issuance of camping permits during the camping season. The existing PRS is a .NET application with a SQL Server database running Windows Server and Internet Information Services (IIS).
The Parks Seasonal Site system (PSS) allows Parks to manage applications from the public for approximately 1500 seasonal campsites, where the public can purchase the rights to occupy a single seasonal campsite for the entire camping season. PSS is run by Visual Basic and MS Access.
Conservation and Climate is looking to implement a new complete, user-pay, internet-based mobile-friendly park reservation solution for nightly and seasonal camping. Manitoba is looking to integrate the PRS and PSS functionality and develop a Manitoba Parks mobile-friendly web application. With the new integrated system, the internal business processes will be greatly improved while providing a modernized customer service experience with a fun, informative and interactive way to experience Manitoba’s provincial parks. This application will become a key tool/resource for the camper that will help Manitoba Parks promote parks and provide real-time alerts and important updates for its visitors. The Department of Conservation and Climate’s goal is to ensure that all Parks related purchases are managed in a single solution. The existing PRS/PSS would be, in turn, decommissioned.
