Description

Objectives Newfoundland is not home to the “accidental tourist”, that is one who happens upon our province while in pursuit of another destination. The Newfoundland tourist is prepared, and has a keen desire for fresh air. They want an untainted, rugged, natural environment, and wish to meet people who are known internationally for unwavering kindness. They yearn to experience a unique culture that cannot be matched anywhere else in Canada, one that can only be found on an island surrounded by the cold, crashing Atlantic Ocean.

Gambo has long searched for its place in the Newfoundland tourism industry and for years we have relished in our association with being the birthplace of Joey Smallwood. The Smallwood Era became a crucial part of our cultural identity and a defining part of our history. Perhaps so absorbed in this association, for years we have forgotten to stay current, to provide our visitors with contemporary, meaningful experiences. We have forgotten that the tourist of the 1990’s is merely a distant relative of today’s traveler.

Thus, as visitor preferences evolve, so too is the need to acclimatize to a changing tourism market. Via the implementation of the proposed enhancements to the Town of Gambo tourism portfolio, we aim to respond in a way that allows us to achieve the following objectives:

 Improve marketing to establish Gambo as a place to visit in the minds of travelers and potential travelers.
 Drive visitation and increase travelers and visitor expenditures
 Improve the interpretive potential of the Joey Smallwood exhibit
 Improve efficient function of the Smallwood Interpretation Centre to accommodate a higher number of visitors
 Contemporize visitor experience with improvements to digital marketing, on site technology and media, and visitor programming.
 Increased engagement of private industry
 Increased visitation to other communities and tourism attractions along The Shore.
