Ribbon Creek Trail is located within Spray Valley Provincial Park in Kananaskis, Alberta, and links the front country Ribbon Creek Day Use Area to a number of backcountry campgrounds and trails. However, in order to access key backcountry locations, people must travel up and over the Ribbon Headwall with the assistance of chains. This chain system was installed in the early 1980’s, but weathering and heavy use has caused the rock, particularly in vertical sections, to become polished and slippery. The risk is amplified when people are carrying heavy loads, the area is wet or they are down-climbing. Alberta Parks staff who assessed the rock band for an alternate route determined the existing route is in the most appropriate location when a new traverse is installed.

Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) requires the services of qualified firms for the design, supply and installation of a new and safer traverse where the Ribbon Chains are currently located. AEP is seeking proponents to submit proposals on completing the Ribbon Lake Chains Refurbishment as a Design-Build Project. The goal is to complete all aspects required for project execution within one cohesive contract where all parties collaborate throughout each Phase of work.
