21TDRPOL803 - Advancing Alberta's Regional Risk Assessment (AARRA)

The GOA considers and manages a broad range of risks as part of its strategic and business processes, using tools like the Enterprise Risk Management Framework (ERMF) and the Common Risk Management Tool (CRMT). Periodic efforts to enhance these processes and tools are founded in government’s commitment to continuous improvement.

Alignment of operational approaches to the realities of a changing climate are underway, with steps taken to identify and assess potential climate change impacts and vulnerabilities, and to assign and manage associated risk. For example, a government-wide climate change risk assessment was conducted in 2013 using the ISO 31000:2009 risk management standard.

With funding support from Natural Resources Canada’s Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Division, AEP is seeking a contractor to examine government’s approach to climate risk assessment and identify areas for enhanced management of climate risks.

The goals of this project are to:
• identify and test an enhanced methodology for climate change risks assessments,
• understand and where needed, find ways to augment the role of climate risk assessment in government’s broader risk management system and
• recommend ways to better integrate the management of climate risks into government strategic planning and decision making processes.
