Description

The Turtle Portage marine railway is a hand-operated, mechanical boat transfer facility located on Lake of the Woods in the province of Ontario. UTM 15U 418240 5450026. The site is accessible only by boat. The facility is owned and operated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Kenora District. It allows the public to transfer boats over land between Whitefish Bay and Sabaskong Bay, providing a ‘shortcut’ that eliminates a 150-kilometre detour around the Aulneau Peninsula.
The current system requires retrofits to improve safety, function, and reliability
Scope of Work
Per the drawings in Schedule 5, the contractor shall be responsible for, but not limited to:

1. perform repairs to existing concrete
2. provide new boat cart
3. demolish and replace rails
4. provide railing along walkway
5. remove and replace mechanical winch and hand-crank equipment
6. remove and replace damaged wooden curbs along walkway
7. provide new locking pins for all dock connections

August 4, 2021, 13:00 (Toronto time).

As this site is remote and accessible only by boat, it is a Bidder’s sole responsibility to get to the site and at the specified time. Public boat launches are available in Nestor Falls and Sioux Narrows, Ontario. Both are approximately 30 kilometres by boat from the site. Private boat rentals and operators for hire are available at local tourism establishments. There are also private lodges within closer proximity to the site which could be utilized but is a Bidder’s sole responsibility to arrange.
