RFP No. EDC-22-05 - Planning for Facilities for Alberta Charter Schools

Alberta offers a number of education options that allow parents to select the path they feel will best help their children reach their full potential. The Choice in Education Act strengthens Alberta's successful history of educational choice, including public and separate schools, Francophone schools, charter schools, independent (private) schools, early childhood education and home education.

The Government of Alberta (GOA) is committed to developing facility options, policies, and legislation that better support charter schools in their ability to meet the requirement, of identifying an appropriate facility, in a timely manner. This will require a thorough investigation of facility alternatives – including assets currently owned by school authorities and by other ministries based on data provided by Alberta Education, privately owned facilities for lease or purchase, and sites available for development. Consideration to be given to how to identify and optimize resources in a sustainable way.

The work required is to identify a facility planning and prioritization strategy that considers existing obstacles such as available real estate (including facilities and sites); access to information on school site needs of all school authorities; legislative/regulatory/administrative barriers, risks, financial support, etc.; and identifies the actions that would be required to remove or reduce those barriers, and the risks and timeframes to implement each of the identified options.
