As part of the Town of Stony Plain Art in Public Places Program, the Town is pleased to announce this competition for the design and installation of a three-dimensional artwork (the “Work”) that will be permanently installed within the municipal cemetery. Individual artists and artist teams with prior experience with large-scale permanent public art installations are eligible to apply. This Call for Artists consists of two-stages. The Town intends to shortlist up to three (3) qualified artists from Stage I to continue to Stage II of this opportunity. The total commission available for the final artwork is $67,500 CAD (all inclusive, excluding GST) and must cover all costs associated with the design, fabrication, transportation, and on-site installation requirements of the Work. While there are no specific subject matter or media requirements, the Work must be a new creation and adhere to the following design parameters:
• Must be original Work of the artist, and must not be a duplicate of other public art installations of the artist
• The design must remain neutral and non-denominational, ensuring it is welcoming to all audiences
• The Artist is responsible for all fabrication and installation requirements including but not limited to engineering, design of base, delivery/installation of Work, etc.
• Must meet all Alberta building codes standards (where applicable)
• Must be designed to be viewed in 360 degrees
• Must fit within the prescribed installation space as outlined in Annex C – Location Context and be engineered to comply with the Geotechnical Analysis of the space in Annex D
• The base must not exceed one (1) metre from center in any direction
• Must not interfere with the operation and serviceability of the area (i.e. for ease of maintenance the Work must include a base that enables Town staff to cut grass around)
• Selected materials must be durable to suit weather conditions
• Does not impede safe access or use of the hilltop viewpoint
• Does not pose a risk of injury to the public (i.e. cannot be a climbing structure)
• Is vandal resistant • Meets fire codes with respect to flammability, etc
• Appropriate for family and general community viewing/usage
• Appropriate for the location and the usage of the space
• Installation of the Work is to be completed by October 17, 2025 (pending Town and Artist availability, and based on construction schedule of Cemetery)
