Description

The Tourism and Recreation Division of Alberta Culture and Tourism works with communities to develop, evaluate and grow authentic tourism experiences in Alberta. This is accomplished by providing a suite of programs. Currently, those programs do not necessarily leverage off each other to appropriately meet the needs of communities in different stages of tourism development. Through an accredited Visitor Friendly destination framework, we aim to better coordinate our existing suite of programs and develop a new spectrum that will set communities on a path to become an accredited destination. The framework is intended to be a holistic multi-phased that will enable communities at any stage to:

- Have a clearer understanding of what tourism is and can mean for their community;
- Determine if tourism development is a viable opportunity (economically and socially) for the community;
- Determine what appropriate next steps or pathway a community needs to take to work towards becoming an accredited destination;
- Sustain and support capacity building for tourism within their community.
