MiHR develops and maintains two types of Standards 1) National Occupational Standards (NOS)
2) National Occupation Training Standards (NOTS) for a suite of seven (7) occupations in the Canadian mining sector. The development and maintenance of these Standards is led by stakeholder Development Committees made up of occupation specific subject-matter experts representing industry, labour and education from across Canada. The Standards are reviewed and updated a minimum of every five years to ensure they remain current and relevant to the Canadian mining industry.
National Occupational Standards (NOS) establish clear, objective benchmarks of the skills and knowledge required for workers to perform in a particular occupation. NOS are currently available for the following occupations: Underground Miner, Surface Miner, Minerals Processing Operator, Diamond Driller, Frontline Supervisor, Industry Trainer, and Hoist Operator.
All areas of competency and tasks for the seven (7) NOS have been pulled together in MiHR's Master Competency List (See Appendix A). The Master Competency List allows you to understand those competencies and tasks that are included across multiple occupations. Each area of competency and its related tasks keep the same task (identification) number regardless of the NOS in which they are included.
National Occupational Training Standards (NOTS) align to their respective NOS. The NOTS identify the learning outcomes and learning objectives to guide the development of quality training and support the development of the workforce skills needed by employers.
