Objective:
The purpose of this renovation and redesign is to enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the four upstairs halls of the Sikh Spiritual Centre Toronto, aligning with traditional Sikh architectural elements and design while ensuring the spaces are fully functional for various activities, ceremonies, and community gatherings.

Scope of Work:

1. Design Approach:
   • Incorporate traditional Sikh architectural styles, emphasizing harmony, serenity, and spiritual elements.
   • Use symbolic designs such as Sikh calligraphy (e.g., Gurbani verses), floral motifs, and geometric patterns that are traditionally seen in Gurdwara architecture.
   • Maintain a balance between aesthetic beauty and the practical needs of the community, ensuring that the renovated halls can accommodate large gatherings, meetings, and other activities.
   • Ensure that the color schemes, lighting, and materials reflect the sacred and peaceful environment of the Gurdwara, with natural and neutral tones, as well as a focus on creating a welcoming and spiritual atmosphere.
2. Architectural Elements:
   • Incorporate intricate woodwork, arches, and columns that reflect Sikh craftsmanship.
   • Decorative ceilings with traditional patterns or designs inspired by Sikh heritage.
   • Stained glass windows with symbolic motifs that filter soft, natural light into the hall.
   • Traditional carpets or flooring with cultural significance (e.g., handwoven rugs or tiles with geometric designs).
   • Ornate light fixtures that blend functionality with elegance, ensuring adequate lighting for ceremonies while adding an ornamental touch to the space.
3. Space Planning & Functionality:
   • Redesign the layout of each hall to accommodate various needs, such as community prayers, kirtans, educational programs, and social gatherings.
   • Flexible seating arrangements that can be easily reconfigured for different events. Incorporate traditional seating options (e.g., benches or floor seating) while also considering comfort and accessibility.
   • Soundproofing and acoustic treatment to enhance the quality of speeches, prayers, and musical performances (e.g., kirtans, katha).
   • Ensure that all spaces are wheelchair accessible and meet the requirements of persons with disabilities.
   • Storage solutions should be integrated to house ceremonial items, religious texts, and other equipment in a discreet yet easily accessible manner.
4. Materials and Finishes:
   • Use high-quality, sustainable materials that reflect the Gurdwara's commitment to reverence for the environment and cultural heritage.
   • Wood, stone, and metal finishes that are both functional and traditional.
   • Durable flooring that complements the design and ensures ease of maintenance while adding to the aesthetic appeal.
   • Decorative wall panels and finishes made from natural materials (e.g., wood, marble, or sandstone).
5. Lighting and Ventilation:
   • Integrate soft, ambient lighting to create a warm, spiritual atmosphere. Consider using recessed lighting or chandeliers that add grandeur to the space without overwhelming the sacredness of the halls.
   • Natural light should be maximized through carefully positioned windows, skylights, or glass panels, ensuring an open, airy feeling while maintaining privacy and protection from the elements.
   • Ensure proper ventilation and air circulation systems are included to provide comfort during gatherings.
6. Safety & Compliance:
   • All renovations must comply with local building codes and fire safety regulations, including accessible exits, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, and signage.
   • The materials used must meet safety standards, especially regarding fire resistance.
7. Timeline & Budget:
   • The project must be completed within before May 2026 from the date of contract award.
   • The budget for the renovation should be outlined clearly, with cost estimates for labor, materials, and all design elements included.
8. Experience and Qualifications:
   • The contractor should have prior experience in working with religious institutions, particularly places of worship, and should demonstrate an understanding of Sikh culture and architecture. 
   • The spaces need to be beautiful and high quality. 
   • Provide examples of previous renovation projects that align with the scope and vision for this project.
