DESCRIPTION OF PROCUREMENT
The Young-June Kim Lab is a condensed matter physics group within the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto. The Lab synthesizes and studies novel quantum materials including high temperature superconductors, two-dimensional magnetic materials, and magnetic thin films. Sample synthesis is an involved procedure and diagnostic tools in the lab are essential for cutting-edge materials synthesis and characterization. Currently, the Lab operates several materials characterization instruments, including an X-ray diffraction system, a Cryogen-free Physical Properties Measurement System, and a Magnetic Properties Measurement System. The latter system is capable of a sensitive measurement of magnetic susceptibility of extremely small samples using the SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) technology.
A Cryogen-free SQUID magnetometry system will replace the aforementioned Magnetic Properties Measurement System. The new system will serve the entire University community, therefore it should be able to support a variety of research needs under extreme magnetic field and temperature conditions. One example is a highly sensitive AC susceptibility measurements on single molecule magnets. The University community users will have different skill levels, therefore the system should be able to allow for safe and easy operation for the users and other occupants of the facility. The procurement is anticipated to involve negotiation. An electronic auction is not anticipated.
