Description

Supply and Delivery of a Continuous Particulate Ambient Air Monitor
Scope of Work
At the request of MECP Regional Offices, the Environmental Monitoring and Reporting Branch (EMRB) undertakes several air quality surveys annually to investigate emissions in air in the vicinity of facilities in Ontario.

To date EMRB’s mobile TAGA (Trace Atmospheric Gas Analyzer) platforms have focused almost exclusively on the measurement of volatile organic compounds and trace gases. However, the platform has not had the capability of measuring particulate matter in air, which has been requested by Regional Offices in the past. Recent advances in particulate matter measurement technology have led to the development of instrumentation that can quantitatively measure the different size fractions of particulate matter in air (PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and total PM) simultaneously at high time resolution.

The procurement of this instrumentation will enable the TAGA mobile platform to act as a screening tool for assessing total particulate matter concentrations, for which a standard exists under Ontario Regulation 419 - Local Air Quality (O. Reg. 419/05). It will also enable the platform to differentiate between combustion PM emissions and fugitive dust emissions, found in the smaller and larger PM size fractions, respectively.

When combined with concurrent GPS (Global Positioning System) data, high time resolution PM concentration data can be used to produce spatial maps of PM in the vicinity of facilities to support weight-of-evidence based decision making. Furthermore, high time resolution measurements of particulate matter will be valuable for assessing when the mobile platform is in-plume or out-of-plume while downwind of fires during emergency response activities.
