Description

The department is working on developing new and innovative research tools that will enable unprecedented direct imaging and control of very fast processes and quantum dynamics in materials and devices down to the atomic scale, which is essential for understanding how materials work at the most fundamental level and for developing new device technologies.

One of the main components required is a Single-Probe Scanning (STM) Tunneling System with optical access to the tip-sample area and allows for rapid sample testing. This is the only system that is compatible with the existing Beetle STM in the lab and is a custom design unique to RHK Technology.

The Singe-Probe Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM) System is critical to the department’s research for the following reasons:

• It is configured for operation in ambient or high vacuum (HV) conditions;
• It has an optics breadboard within the chamber;
• It is possible to remove the scan head flange from the HV chamber and place it anywhere on the optics bench for user-designed ambient terahertz scanning tunnelling microscopy (THz-STM) experiments with even greater optical and electrical access; and
• It allows for sample interchange and controller compatibility between the two (2) systems.

There is no other system on the market that offers these capabilities.

Systems for Research Corporation is the only Canadian representative for RHK Technology in Canada.
